GTX 970  /  i7-14700  /  OpenCore

I was deciding on a laptop at the time and wanted to know whether macOS was actually worth it. Rather than guess, I built it on the hardware I already had and found out.

That turned into macOS running on my main PC — a GeForce GTX 970 and a Core i7-14700, told by the bootloader that all of it is a 2017 iMac Pro.

The hard part

Boot arguments. They were the most difficult thing to get right, and any one of them could break something else. Sometimes it wouldn’t boot at all. Sometimes it said the device didn’t work. Sometimes the mouse and keyboard were dead.

What fixed it

I built the EFI myself. Before that I was using other people’s to see whether they would work, and slowly it became clear that they wouldn’t — not for this combination of parts. Making my own is what got it stable.

Where it stands

Acceleration works. Metal does not — the card is too old for it, and no amount of patching brings it back. Partial, and that’s the real result.
